Our internships provide insight into how the federal government works, allowing you to apply their theoretical knowledge, develop practical skills, and gain valuable industry-specific experience. As an intern, you’ll be guided and mentored by experienced professionals.
We offer the following internship programs:
Pathways Internship Program
- Internships are available year round.
- Applications open in October and February.
- During the academic school year, you must commit to working part-time to complete all required hours before graduating in May or June.
- As a summer intern, you will be expected to work full time, Monday through Friday. Summer internships typically start in June and finish in August.
- Paid internship positions start at the GS-4 pay grade level, but compensation may vary depending on location.
Eligibility
You must be a:
- U.S. citizen.
- Student in an accredited high school, college (including four-year colleges or universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree program; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.
Position descriptions
Available academic school year internships
Business and industry or contracting student trainee (1199 job series).
- Business and industry. As a business and industry student trainee, you will work closely with professionals in our organization and gain practical experience in procuring goods and services for the federal government. This internship will expose you to various departments and projects, allowing you to develop a well-rounded skill set in a real-world setting.
- Contracting. As a contracting student trainee, you will assist the team with tasks related to contract procurement and negotiation. You will work closely with our experienced professionals about the contracting process, including solicitation development, contract administration, and vendor management. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in business, finance, or related fields.
Summer internships
Administration and office-support student trainee (399 job series). As a program support student trainee, you will work closely with our experienced program support team and contribute to developing and implementing initiatives that drive organizational success. This internship will provide hands-on experience in various aspects of program support, including coordinating projects, analyzing data, and program evaluation.

Legal Externship Program
Our competitive Legal Externship Program offers law students to observe legal practice in a federal setting. You will learn about the work, roles, and responsibilities of our attorneys and support staff teams in the Office of General Counsel.
As an extern, you will participate in training and challenging assignments such as research, analysis, and drafting legal documents in practice areas that include administrative law, employment law, government ethics, procurement, real estate, construction, government travel, cybersecurity, litigation, and legislation.
What you need to know to apply:
- We accept applications year-round.
- You can work full or part time.
- You can work remotely (subject to change).
- The externship is unpaid.
- We will work with you to meet your academic institution’s requirements to earn academic credit.
Eligibility
You must be:
- A U.S. citizen.
- Enrolled in a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.
- Approved to participate by your law school.
- Available for a semester-long commitment.
